Summer Plans

There are still a few months left in this school year, but now is the time to start devising a plan to take full advantage of what summer camp has to offer talented students.

Students pursuing STEM-related college majors might want to consider using this time to strengthen their university admissions application and offsetting the effects of summer brain drain.

Some students will choose to relax during summer vacation. And we don’t blame them. However, students wishing to pursue a STEM-related college major might want to consider using this time to strengthen their university admissions application and offsetting the effects of summer brain drain.

Benefits of math proficiency

Many college majors and careers in STEM require a strong foundation in math. While Common Core (CCSS) has made an attempt to bring real world application to problem solving, it still isn’t enough. Deeper proficiency in mathematics comes has to come from outside of the classroom.

Participating in math competitions is a great extracurricular activity. It get students regularly exercising their math skills and building deeper proficiency in mathematical concepts.

Surrounded by like minded peers who are the very same people vying for acceptance at America’s best universities.

Another benefit to competing in math competitions like AMC 10/12 and AIME, is students are around surrounded by like-minded peers. These are the very same students vying for acceptance at America’s best universities like MIT, CalTech, and Harvard. These university applications even allow students to list their scores.

Stem-centered Math Camps

STEM-centered math summer camps offer students an opportunity to get ahead in their academic marathon. Math camps go beyond curriculum taught in the classroom. They also are a good way for students to get ahead for the upcoming year of math MathCounts, AMC, and AIME math competitions.

Consistent practice in math

Areteem Institute’s residential math summer camps are structured like the Mathematical Olympiad Program (MOP) camps held at Carnegie Mellon University. Students have a chance to co-mingle with passion-driven kids aspiring to be the next generation as STEM leaders.

Students will have an opportunity in the evening to sit in on talks from leading college professors and professionals in STEM careers

Five days a week, students engage in two sessions of math learning with focus on math competition style problem solving techniques. In the afternoon students break out into sessions of team building, debate, talent shows, and anything fun. Students will have an opportunity in the evening to sit in on talks from leading college professors and professionals in STEM careers. Weekends are reserved for excursions to tourist attractions and theme parks.

This year’s residential camps will be held at Georgetown University June 16 – July 5 and UC San Diego July 21 – August 9.

More opportunities for math learning

If these residential camps don’t fit into your summer schedule, Areteem is holding two 2-week day math camps in the Chicago and San Jose areas.

In the meantime, download the ZIML app to get daily math problems for middle school and high school students and participate in the monthly the competition.
