Are you interested in becoming a “scientist for a day”? Have you ever dreamed of working at NASA or its Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL)? Well, now here is your chance to do just that!
For this school year, from now in 2016 until early Spring 2017, students in grades 5th to 12th can participate in a Science Essay Contest for NASA’s “Cassini Scientist for a Day” project. Students will be able to use their critical thinking skills and conduct research taking on role of a scientist, using real data from the Cassini science team in order to come up with their own theories of what NASA’s next project should be.
For the Essay Contest, students will need to first do some scientific research on Saturn and its moons. Students can work individually or in class groups assigned by their school teachers. On the NASA website, they are to pick one of the three images, choosing from “Enceladus’ Plumes”, “Titan’s Lakes” and “Saturn’s Hexagon” that they find the most interesting and write their essay of up to 500 words based on one of the target topics. They are to explain why the image they have chosen is fascinating to them and how this particular feature of Saturn could bring more fruitful scientific results for Cassini scientists at NASA.
The essay adheres to National English and Science Education standards and is open to all US and International students. The deadline to submit essays in the United States is on February 24, 2017 while dates for International submissions are also included on the website. An FAQ can be found on the NASA website with details about the Essay Contest.
Teachers can use the essay as a teaching tool for their students in either their English or Science classes in elementary, middle and high school.

In May 2016, more than 1,700 students representing 75 countries, regions and territories will be in Phoenix, AZ for the Intel ISEF – to compete for more than $5 million in awards, scholarships, internships and prizes. These high school students are the top winners of regional, state and national science fairs from around the United States and the world.
Areteem faculty members Dr. Kevin Wang and Ms. Kelly Ren have been chosen to be among the judges who will be supporting the young scientists of the Intel ISEF. They will engage in meaningful discussions with the student finalists. Judging is the single most important activity at the Intel ISEF and determines the distribution of millions of dollars in prizes, according to the judging committee.

Many people may not realize that Mathematics (Algebra, Analysis, Combinatorics, Graph Theory and Game Theory, Geometry and Topology, Number Theory and Probability and Statistics) is in fact one of the 22 major categories students are competing in.

The popularity of Math Competitions is rising, mainly due to the important role it plays in fueling student interest in the subject and other intellectual and academic pursuits, as well as building credibility for college applications. A well designed math competition is not just about developing speed and articulation in problem solving, it trains students to deal with real-life situations that test their decision-making abilities. The exposure with like-minded students also cultivates positive peer influence and team work.
Areteem Institute is once again offering it’s prestigious ZIML (Zoom International Math League) to Middle and High School students during the summer at it’s camp locations. The online version of the ZIML which is held during the Fall season will be enhanced in the upcoming school year with more opportunities and a systematic tracking method for you to demonstrate your tracking record of math aptitude to the college admissions.

We enjoyed having you at our booth and taking part in our hands on activities and stimulating mind games!
Getting to know the talented student participants has been the highlight of our weekend.
The investigative skills, creativity and enthusiasm of these future innovators are the attributes that we develop in our summer camps. Areteem Institute continues to cultivate student interest and talents in project-oriented research, STEM careers and profound discussions about science fiction.
We are looking forward to seeing you all this summer in one of our 4 locations: UCLA, Georgetown University, Bentley University and San Diego!

School’s out for summer and we at Areteem are spending it at camp – this time around at UCLA, the first of our three camps!
Take a look at all of the exciting activities our students have been involved in for the past couple of weeks including fun math and science classes, design workshops, outdoor recreation, talks with our instructors and great field trips.
We celebrated the 4th of July at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena enjoying the spectacular fireworks show.
We hope this encourages you to check our summer camps for next year. Next we are off to Boston College and the University of Chicago!

Students Enjoy a Fun Day of Math Competitions
Math Contestants from all over OC flocked to the annual OC Math Field Day event last weekend on May 16, 2015! This day of exciting competitions, held on the campus of Westminster High School, allowed fourth to sixth grade students who had been selected by their schools to compete head-to-head in different categories related to mathematics. Each school invited around 12 students per grade level to represent their school.
Our educational outreach crew at Areteem Institute joined in on the fun to experience all that the day had to offer! Our booth was centrally located where all of the parents and teachers set up their tents and provided much needed treats and refreshment to the hungry contestants between competitions. We were also able to view all of the great posters that each school had contributed, relating to this year’s theme of “Livin’ the Math Dream in 2015”. Students who visited our booth in the morning were delighted by the unique hands-on STEM projects that we brought to the event based on our “Carnival of STEAM-antics” that was a hit at this year’s LA County Science and Engineering Fair!
In the afternoon we moved indoors to the campus gym and took part in the event known as the “Rubik’s Cube Challenge”. A handful of schools participated where they had to quickly solve the puzzling Rubik’s Cube in the fastest amount of time…and believe us those fingers were flying! The event closed with the Awards Ceremony where we had the privilege of awarding medals to all of the winners. School teams were awarded from sixth place to first place based on the categories involved in the competition which included: Algebraic Thinking, Number Operations, Data Analysis, Geometry and Measurement. At the end of the day, every student received a goodie bag from us to take home, what a day! It was a great opportunity to network with OC parents and educators and we thank the Orange County Math Council for having us sponsor the event for another year in a row!
