Spring Initial Preparation Guide for the 2020-21 Math Competitions (AMC 8, MATHCOUNTS, AMC 10/12, + More!)

With the unfortunate news that the MAA is suspending the rest of this school year’s math competitions (see official information from the MAA Competition site here) and similar uncertainty surrounding MATHCOUNTS (see official announcements on the MATHCOUNTS page here), it is time for many to start preparing for the 2020-21 Math Competitions starting next fall.

Starting preparation early gives students extra time to prepare and improve, and helps build a solid knowledge that will stay with them for years to come.

AMC 8

With the AMC 8 exam typically held in November, the spring is a great time to being preparing for the 2020 AMC 8.

AMC 8 Preparation with Math Challenge I-AB Self-Paced: Students wishing to learn at their own pace can use our self-paced materials and textbooks to learn all the fundamental knowledge needed for the AMC 8. AMC 8 Preparation with Year Round Math Challenge I-A and I-B Live Courses: For students who want live interaction with their teacher, the year round MC I-A and MC I-B courses systematically cover the fundamental knowledge needed for the AMC 8. Each live session covers one subject in 10 weeks. Live courses include live video lectures and graded homework, supplementing the dedicated textbook for the course.

MATHCOUNTS

The MATHCOUNTS team competition has various levels that compete throughout the school year. Much of the knowledge needed for MATHCOUNTS overlaps with the AMC 8 and AMC 10/12 competitions. We recommend any student preparing for MATHCOUNTS should also prepare for the AMC 8 and AMC 10 or 12.

2020 AMC 8 to 10 Bridge Intensive Prep Package: For a jump-start to next school year, including all the fundamental knowledge in Algebra and Geometry that student’s will need for the chapter and state MATHCOUNTS exams, this preparation package blends live and self-paced learning with our Math Challenge I-C curriculum. Completing this package will allow the student to jump into more challenging material starting in the fall.

Students confident in their ability to succeed at school and chapter MATHCOUNTS should follow the guidelines below for preparing for the AMC 10/12, which will prepare them for state and national MATHCOUNTS.

AMC 10 and AMC 12

With the AMC 10 and 12 exams typically held in late winter / early spring, students have the summer and much of the school year to prepare for the AMC 10/12.

2020 AMC 8 to 10 Bridge Intensive Prep Package: The AMC 10 exam requires many math concepts typically taught during Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II in schools. Many younger students have the capability to do well on the AMC 10 exam, but need time to learn and master these topics. This preparation package uses the Math Challenge I-C curriculum to teach students the fundamental knowledge they need for success on the AMC 10 during the spring and summer. This allows students to learn more advanced problem solving techniques starting in the fall.

2021 AMC 10 Intensive Prep Package: Starting in Fall 2020, this preparation package blends live and self-paced learning using the Math Challenge II-A curriculum to give students the necessary background and problem solving skills they need to succeed on the 2021 AMC 10. Students should take this course with the goal of qualifying for AIME. It is recommended that students without AMC 10 experience begin with the 2020 AMC 8 to 10 Bridge Intensive Prep Package before taking this prep package.

AMC 10/12 Preparation with Math Challenge II-A and II-B Self-Paced: Students wishing to learn at their own pace can use our self-paced materials and textbooks to learn all the fundamental knowledge needed for the AMC 10 and 12. Self-paced courses include video lectures and homework, supplementing the dedicated textbook for the course.

AMC 10/12 Preparation with Year Round Math Challenge II-A and II-B Live Courses: For students who want live interaction with their teacher, the year round MC II-A and MC II-B courses systematically cover the fundamental knowledge needed for the AMC 10 and 12. Each live session covers one subject in 10 weeks. Live courses include live video lectures and graded homework, supplementing the dedicated textbook for the course.

AIME and USA(J)MO

With the AIME and USA(J)MO typically held in early spring after the AMC 10 and 12 competitions, students have the summer and much of the school year to prepare. Remember, these are invitational competitions, so students must first succeed on the AMC 10 and/or AMC 12 to qualify. See above for options for AMC 10/12 Prep.

2021 AIME Intensive Prep Package: Starting in Fall 2020, this preparation package blends live and self-paced learning using the Math Challenge III curriculum to give students the necessary background and problem solving skills they need to succeed on the 2021 AIME. Students should take this course with the goal of improving their AMC 10/12 and AIME scores to qualify for USA(J)MO. It is recommended that students who have not yet qualified for AIME take the 2021 AMC 10 Intensive Prep Package instead of this package.
