There is no doubt math competitions are challenging for students, but they can also be fun too. Math competitions enrich student lives by promoting mathematical reasoning and teamwork while preparing them for a future in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) by requiring complex problems to be solved using a non-routine, creativity that isn\u2019t always presented in the classroom.<\/p>\n

Math contests challenge students’ conceptual understanding, computational and procedural skills. This develops respect and passion for the beauty of math.<\/p>\n

Math enrichment beyond the classroom<\/h2>\n

Math competitions are held throughout the country as well as internationally and are for all levels including elementary school, middle school, high school, and university.<\/p>\n

Common Core State Standards<\/span><\/span><\/a> (CCSS) focus on conceptual level understanding, problem-solving, and real-world applications; however, standard coursework in American schools do not dive deep enough to prepare students for math competitions and careers in STEM as most schools relegate advanced mathematics to extracurricular participation to afterschool math clubs.<\/p>\n

Participation in math competitions, such as the American Mathematics Competition<\/a><\/span> (AMC), have long-lasting benefits for students as they prepare for university and professional careers.<\/p>\n

By encouraging students to participate in competitions, we help them to prepare for a world that is more and more reliant on STEM. We recommend starting with the AMC 8 for middle school students and work toward participating in the AMC 10, AMC 12, and more rigorous math competitions like the American Invitational Mathematics Examination<\/a><\/span> (AIME) and the International Mathematical Olympiad<\/a><\/span> (IMO).<\/p>\n

Regular practice builds proficiency<\/h2>\n

To help students get ready for the upcoming\u00a0AMC 10\/12 A<\/a><\/span> and AMC 10\/12 B<\/a><\/span> on February 7 and 13, 2019,\u00a0 we will be posting three additional problems on our\u00a0ZIML<\/a><\/span> app every day until February 6 to help students in their preparation.<\/p>\n

We also recommend students register for our monthly Junior Varsity and Varsity ZIML competitions<\/a><\/span>. Our next ZIML monthly competition begins this Friday, January 1 and will close Sunday night, January 3 at 11:59 pm. You can register on the ZIML app.<\/p>\n

For students who want to continue to challenge their minds and deepen their knowledge of math, Areteem Institute’s residential summer camps<\/a><\/span>\u00a0at Georgetown and UC San Diego will be a great opportunity to interact with like-minded peers with a passion for mathematics and STEM. The super early bird<\/em> deadline is February 28, 2019, and our UC San Diego camp will be hosting the ZIML Convention<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n
